The curriculum of St. Bonaventure's College is based upon the provincial curriculum as prescribed by the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Our curriculum is outcomes-based, with many enhancements made. The high school courses offered include all the core courses required for graduation with elective courses geared to students moving on to post-secondary education. We seek to bring out the best academic performance in all our students, and strive always for academic excellence. Our school has excellent concert and jazz bands, a choral music programme, debating league, public speaking competitions, math league, improvisation teams at the junior and senior high levels, drama club and male and female sports teams in a variety of sports (soccer, track and field, badminton, volleyball, basketball, and hockey) and in nearly all age groups. Students are also involved in pastoral activities such as visiting the elderly, sending Christmas presents to the needy abroad, and Christian leadership activities. They also participate with notable success in the local music festivals, arts and letters competitions, drama festivals and improve competitions, science fairs and heritage fairs. The senior concert and jazz bands achieved gold medal standing at the most recent Canada MusicFest held in Toronto in 2003. Other extracurricular activities include an after-school art programme (which is a credit course for high school students), a film and video club with hands-on instruction in film-making, and Irish step-dancing.Also in keeping with the Jesuit tradition, we execute the curriculum based on the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, which involves learning through experience, followed by reflection, discernment, and leading to action. It is the goal of St. Bonaventure's College to instill in its students Christian attitudes and values to make them fully human, and to give them the strength of character to act upon their beliefs. |
