St. Bonaventure's College is a Kindergarten to Grade Twelve Catholic School in the Jesuit tradition, in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is located in the historic centre of North America's oldest city, adjacent to the Roman Catholic Basilica of St. John the Baptist, and opposite The Rooms (The new provincial art gallery). The college was founded by Bishop Thomas Mullock in 1857 and placed under the administration of the Franciscan Friars. In 1889, the administered was passed on to the Irish Christian Brothers. In 1998, the college was closed following a reorganization of schools brought on by the end of denominational education in the province. In 1999, however, St. Bons re-opened as an independent Roman Catholic School and its administration was given to the Society of Jesus. St. Bonaventure's College is the youngest Jesuit School in Canada, is the only coeducational and the only all-grade Jesuit school in the country and in 2003 it became a full member of the Jesuit Secondary School Association. |
